Siganus luridus (Ruppel, 1828)

First official report for mainland Italy of the dark rabbitfish Siganus luridus, the approved scientific article is being published. This species is native to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and it is a herbivorous fish, common above all in the eastern Mediterranean, but which has progressively expanded its range further north. In the Mediterranean only the salpa (Sarpa salpa) has the same diet, and probably due to the scarcity of competitors, the invasion of rabbit fish is having great success. The photographs were taken on 30 December 2013 at the end of a night dive, in Porto Badisco (LE), and portrays a young specimen of about 9 cm. Some distinctive signs of the species can be observed, such as the flattened flaps of skin near the nostrils, the small open mouth downwards. The spines of the fins are slightly poisonous. Subsequently, again in the province of Lecce, other sightings have been reported, specifically they are specimens caught, in Gallipoli and Torre S. Giovanni
