Porto Badisco (Lecce, Italy) Ionious Sea Night dive, 15-20m depth.

Questa specie di idrozoo, possiede una forma fissa polipoide, che vive infossata nella sabbia, come quella riprodotta in foto e il peduncolo può superare i 10 cm. La forma medusoide, precedentemente chiamata Steenstrupia nutans(M. Sars, 1835), può essere alta circa 5-6 cm ed ha una caratteristica forma che ricorda il copricapo dei papi, la mitra. Purtroppo non abbiamo ancora avuto la fortuna di fotografarla.

This species of hydrozoan has a fixed polypoid shape, which lives buried in the sand, like the one reproduced in the photo and the peduncle can exceed 10 cm. The medusoid shape, previously called Steenstrupia nutans (M. Sars, 1835), can be about 5-6 cm tall and has a characteristic shape that recalls the headdress of the popes, the mitre. Unfortunately we haven't had the chance to photograph it yet.
